Data Models

The raster data model is particularly suited to working with imagery. Each cell in a raster layer holds the value of the spectroscopic signature of a specified area of land. By combining three layers representing the red, green, and blue reflectance values of a particular landscape a color image is produced and can be analyzed. Differences between these two data models are becoming less important as modern GIS software packages provide both capabilities. For instance, systems can overlay vector data on the cells of the land cover map, or take a raster data set of elevation values and produce contours (isolines that connect cells of the same elevation) or polygons representing areas that predominantly face a particular direction or have similar slope. Choosing a GIS is somewhat dependent on what the user wants to accomplish. Some tasks are better suited to one model or the other. Input
The process of converting data from paper maps into computer files is called digitizing. Auto-Cad Center at ADS can automate this process fully for large projects using scanning technology; smaller jobs may require some manual digitizing (using a digitizing table).

Manipulation
Data types required for a particular GIS project is transformed or manipulated in a way to make them compatible with your system. For example, geographic information is available at different scales (detailed street centerline files; less detailed census boundaries; and postal codes at a regional level). Before this information can be integrated, it is transformed to the same scale (degree of detail or accuracy). This could be a temporary transformation for display purposes or a permanent one required for analysis.

Management
When data volumes become large and the number of data users becomes more than a few, it is often best to use a database management system (DBMS) to help store, organize, and manage data. There are many different designs of DBMS, but in GIS the relational design has been the most useful. In the relational design, data are stored conceptually as a collection of tables. Common fields in different tables are used to link them together.
